How to compare used cars

A useful shortlist starts with cars that meet the same needs. Decide what you need for your usual journeys, how much space you use and which features matter. Then compare individual listings, rather than treating every car with the same model name as the same offer.

Start with the exact version

Note the model year, engine or battery version, transmission and trim. Check important equipment with the dealer: a model name or a photograph is not enough to confirm that a particular feature is fitted. Keep steering position and distance units in view when comparing listings from different countries.

Put the details in one place

Use a row for each item below. Leave missing information marked “ask the dealer” instead of assuming it matches the other car.

A checklist for your shortlist. These are questions to check, not a condition assessment.
CompareWhat to record or ask
Asking priceCurrency, what is included and any additional dealer charges.
MileageThe reading, its unit, and records that support it.
SpecificationYear, version, transmission and the equipment you need.
Service recordsDates, recorded mileage, work completed and the next scheduled service.
ConditionKnown damage, repairs, tyre condition and anything the dealer says needs attention.
SellerDealership details, the car’s reference and whether it is still available.

Read mileage alongside the records

A lower reading does not tell you everything about a car’s condition. Ask to see the available service records and check that their dates and mileages make sense together. Ask what maintenance is due next. If the records are incomplete, keep that uncertainty in your comparison.

Check what the asking price includes

Record the seller’s currency before comparing prices. Ask for a breakdown of any extra charges and check the details of any advertised warranty. If the car is in another country, confirm the transport, registration and tax requirements for your own situation before treating it as a cheaper option. Carmarked does not calculate those costs or arrange the purchase.

Use the shortlist to plan a viewing

Contact the dealer to confirm availability before travelling. Bring your unanswered questions, check the vehicle details against the documents and ask about a test drive. An independent inspection can help with questions that photos and specifications cannot answer; a comparison table is not a mechanical inspection.

Comparing cars on Carmarked

Our first dealer listings are still to come. When they are available, you’ll be able to compare up to three cars by price, year, mileage and specification. Asking prices stay in their original currency, and each listing links to the dealer. Service documents and condition checks must be discussed with that seller.
